Figure 62 is of the 10mm pig embryo with labeled organs. Figures 63 and 64 of the 12mm pig embryo are superb, with the arterial and venous trunks to the viscera in red and blue, respectively. The book has many well-labeled drawings to flow with the text. A marvelous teacher, student, and practitioner guide. Inside the book cover is written, "Sedgwick E. Smith...to R.W. Bratton, 1/5/77." Dr. Bratton was a Purdue University graduate (1936?), served in the US Army during WW II, and was on the faculty of Cornell University until his retirement about 1978. He helped establish the cooperative bull centers for the new bovine artificial insemination industry in New York state. He was thoroughly involved in teaching and research in swine in the latter part of his career.

69. Infectious Diseases of Swine, by H.C. Smith, 96 pp, ©1957

Donated by: Willis G. Parker, DVM, MSc
Purchased by: Dr. Dave Baumert - $320

The author of this book worked 17 years in the pharmaceutical and biological laboratories and later performed diagnostic and consultation services for the Sioux City, Iowa, division of Allied Laboratories. In 1955, the editors of Veterinary Medicine requested that Dr. H.C. Smith of the staff of Allied Laboratories prepare articles on "Advances Made in Swine Practice." These were combined into the memorable 50th Anniversary issue of that publication (Vol 50, No. 11, Nov 1955). Allied Laboratories, Inc was given permission from the editors of Veterinary Medicine and granted exclusive rights for publication. This red leather textured cover with the Allied Laboratories, Inc. logo stamped into the fabric is uncommon. The book is in very good condition.

There are eleven chapters: Hog Cholera, Swine Erysipelas, Swine Leptospirosis, Swine Enteritis, Swine Influenza, Brucellosis, Swine Pox, Listeriosis, Transmissible Gastroenteritis, Swine Encephalitis, and Chronicle of Progress.

Additionally, there are at least seventy newspaper clippings about the swine industry tucked in among the pages by the donor, Willis G. Parker, DVM, who calls this the "value added edition." As a young farm boy, Willis liked to help butcher hogs and render the lard on the farm at Coatesville, Indiana, then go with his dad to the grain elevator with a bag of cracklings and watch the farmers enjoy the treat!
