AASV Honors Three Veterinarians at Annual MeetingMarch 8, 2005 — Tracy Ann Raef The AASV honored three members for their contributions to the Association and the swine industry. Dr. Dave Madsen, AASV past president, presented the awards at the AASV annual meeting in Toronto, Ontario, March 5-8, 2005. Dr. Michael Sheridan (ONT '77), Steinbach, Manitoba, was named the 2005 Swine Practitioner of the Year. The award, given annually since 1977, recognizes swine practitioners who demonstrate exceptional service to their veterinary clients. It is the Association's highest honor. Dr. Sheridan is a partner and owner of the Sheridan & Heuser Swine Health Services in Steinbach, Manitoba. The practice has four partner veterinarians, five associate veterinarians, and eight support staff who provide veterinary care to swine farms throughout the province of Manitoba. Dr. William Brown (KSU '71), Wamego, Kansas, was awarded the Howard Dunne Memorial Award for his contributions and outstanding service to the Association and the swine industry. Dr. Brown is the Health Services Veterinarian for Monsanto Choice Genetics, where he has worked since 2000. Prior to that, he was director of veterinary services at DeKalb Swine Breeders, Inc., from 1995 to 2000, and staff veterinarian from 1992 to 1995. Dr. Larry Firkins (ILL '86), received the Meritorious Service Award, in recognition of the time and effort he has consistently given to the Association. He is an associate professor and extension swine veterinarian at the University of Illinois College of Veterinary Medicine. On the national level, Dr. Firkins represents the Association on the AVMA Environmental Issues Committee. Closer to home, he serves as a faculty advisor for the student AASV members at the University of Illinois. Congratulations to the 2005 award winners! |
