NAVMEC Seeks Comment from Practitioners

The North American Veterinary Medical Education Consortium (NAVMEC) recently extended the deadline for feedback on its draft report, "Roadmap for Veterinary Medical Education in the 21st Century: Responsive, Collaborative, Flexible," to May 1, 2011. The draft report and recommendations focus on how to ensure that veterinary medical education in North America continues to meet changing societal needs.

The report is currently in a draft state, and is not yet finalized. The extended feedback period is coming to an end, and to ensure that the report takes into account the perspectives of your members, we invite your feedback, as well as that of your members, before the deadline of May 1, 2011.

You can view the draft report and provide your comments by completing a short survey at http://www.navmec.org.

In late 2010, NAVMEC brought together the best minds from across the veterinary profession, along with stakeholders of veterinary medical education, to:

  1. Develop a shared vision for the core competencies in which every graduating veterinarian should achieve proficiency by "day one" post-graduation, regardless of the field they intend to pursue
  2. Identify how the delivery of education would need to change to achieve those competencies
  3. Explore how accreditation and licensure could support the recommended changes in educational approaches

To that end, the Consortium developed a draft report and recommendations, organized according to five strategic goals with recommended executable approaches. NAVMEC is actively seeking full input from all stakeholders of veterinary medical education to help shape the future of veterinary medical education and the profession. All input will be carefully reviewed and considered by the NAVMEC Board of Directors during the process of finalizing the report.
