Position Announcement: Swine Medicine Education Center Fellowship

The Swine Medicine Education Center (SMEC) at Iowa State University is accepting applications for a post-DVM fellowship. The successful applicant will be involved in clinical instruction and applied research focused on swine medicine and may pursue a graduate degree or specialty board certification. The Swine Medicine Education Center (SMEC) is a center dedicated to providing veterinary students and practicing veterinarians from across the United States and around the world with extensive hands-on experiences and education in swine health and production. The center is a joint collaboration between Iowa State University College of Veterinary Medicine and AMVC in Audubon, IA. The mission of the SMEC is to collect and synthesize the best practices for clinical swine medicine and to translate and disseminate those practices to stakeholders who can apply them to improve swine health, ensure pork safety, maintain sustainability, and conserve resources. To date, SMEC has trained students from 17 domestic veterinary schools and 29 countries with both on-farm and distance learning modules.

The primary responsibilities of this position are approximately 60% teaching and research to support SMEC objectives, 20% clinical practice supporting veterinarians and swine producers in the state of Iowa, and 20% pursuit of a graduate degree (M.S. or PhD as appropriate) and/or specialty board certification in Swine Health Management, Clinical Pharmacology, or Preventive Medicine.

Minimum requirements for the position include: 1) graduation from a veterinary college accredited by the AVMA by June 1, 2014; 2) licensure or eligibility for licensure in the State of Iowa; 3) accreditation or eligibility for accreditation by the USDA 4) a valid driver’s license and 5) demonstrated focus on swine medicine. Practice experience is preferred. This is a paid position that also provides health benefits, tuition, continuing education costs and use of a wide range of practice equipment and resources.
