PEDv Update – February 19, 2014

  • Number of New Cases Reported -- Weekly aggregate update of new cases. Starting with the report for diagnostics conducted during the week of 6/17/13, the National Animal Health Laboratory Network (NAHLN) has taken over collecting the data and compiling the report from all labs conducting PED testing. At 272, the number of cases confirmed during the week of 2/09/2014 represents a slight decline from the record high of 301 new cases reported during the week of 2/02/2014. This brings the total number of new cases confirmed since the start of the outbreak to 3528. 25 states have reported at least one confirmed case of PED. The NAHLN has made significant changes to the format of the report. The weekly report of new cases by state starts on page 5. One important addition is the reporting of the total number of cases tested including both positive and negative results. This will provide some perspective regarding the amount of testing being conducted on a weekly basis by state. Last updated: 02/19/14 for the week of 02/09/14.
  • Canadian update
    • PEDv infected herds are confirmed in Ontario and suspected in Manitoba and Prince Edward Island.
    • The Canadian Food Inspection Agency reports a positive bioassay resulting from exposure to samples of U.S.-origin plasma product. Testing has determined that PED virus was present in samples of US-origin plasma obtained at the third-party manufacturer for Grand Valley Fortifiers. This plasma was used as an ingredient in feed pellets produced by the company. Testing with a swine bioassay has determined that the plasma ingredient contains PED virus capable of causing disease in pigs.
