Position Announcement: Senior Veterinary Scientist

Merial seeks a Senior Veterinary Scientist, to be located in Fulton, MO and reporting to the Director, Production Animal Clinical R&D. This individual must be a veterinarian who possesses a broad base of knowledge in the field of veterinary medicine and research. Ensures effective protocol design and conducts clinical and safety trials to evaluate developmental products. Ensures regulatory compliance by being completely cognizant of all Good Laboratory Practices (GLP) and Good Clinical Practice (GCP) guidelines pertaining to veterinary developmental research and effectively applying them. Maintains close contact with area universities, research institutions and leading practitioners and producers as to new developments, opportunities and needs in the animal health industry. Supervises Unit/Area groups as required.

Major Responsibilities:

The position entails many responsibilities as a clinical investigator of studies at the Center as well as a clinical monitor for a field territory. Must have a working knowledge of GLP and Obligations of Clinical Investigators federal regulations since directly responsible for:

  • Selection of suitable outside investigators and facilities.
  • Protocol design and review of protocols with outside investigators.
  • Monitoring of trials conducted by outside investigators.
  • Providing necessary information for drug ordering, shipment and related FDA notification procedures.
  • Assuring that QA inspection is provided during safety trials.
  • Prompt reporting of any trial adverse reactions that could be associated with experimental drug use.
  • Monitoring animals treated and quarantined under INAD.
  • Collection, recording and assembling of data and interpretation of results.
  • Quality and content of trial reports prepared and submitted by the incumbent and outside investigators.
  • Prompt reporting of trial results.
  • Disposal of trial animals treated with an experimental drug.
  • Establishment of a drug inventory, and disposal of unused drug with documentation.

Evaluates proposals and grant-in-aid requests submitted by outside cooperators and investigators.

Responsible for the supervision of personnel assigned to him by the Director on an ongoing basis and during specific trial activities, including large scale necropsy and sample collection operations.

Conducts necropsies on all experimental animals dying or sacrificed during research trials and other non-trial animals when indicated. Comprehensive reports on necropsy findings will be prepared.

Must keep informed of new developments in veterinary medicine, animal husbandry, production and research in his area.

Should utilize opportunities for publication and presentation of papers in selected journals and meetings.

Must exercise discretion and judgment when discussing product development in a commercial environment, in order to maintain confidentiality and exclusivity of future products.

Is expected to perform all duties in a safe manner in accordance with Company guidelines and policy.

Serves as a member of the MRC Sr. Management Team, supporting the Senior Director and fellow Sr Veterinary Scientists/Sr Scientists of the Missouri Research Center to meet site objectives.

Knowledge and Skills:

  • Veterinary degree with 2 or more year’s pharmaceutical industry and/or veterinary clinical trials experience.
  • Advanced degree (MS/PhD) and/or specialty board certification in a veterinary field
