Position Announcement: Extension Educator, Livestock (Swine)

University of Minnesota Extension is recruiting for an Extension Educator, Livestock (Swine). The primary audience for the position will be pork producers and other industry professionals. This position will provide leadership in delivering state-of-the-art educational programs while working with key collaborators. The focus of this position will be on pork production systems management. The successful candidate must have the background and ability to address a wide range of disciplines and issues related to swine production.

Responsibilities and Performance Expectations:

  • Design, develop, deliver and evaluate unbiased research-based, strategic educational programs to address information needs which are appropriate to pork industry audiences.
  • Provide information and education using a variety of techniques to optimize effectiveness consistent with the intended audience’s learning styles.
  • Conduct scholarly applied research in collaboration with faculty and pork producers and garner funds and resources to support educational programs through grants and other means as outlined in Extension’s resource development guide.
  • Develop and maintain effective local, regional, university, state, national, and international partnerships that further the development and delivery of Extension educational programs and industry quality/certification programs.
  • Foster and contribute to a positive work climate with colleagues, advisory groups, audiences, and partnerships.
  • Make progress toward professional advancement by participating in systems of annual performance review, self-evaluation, professional plan of work, and promotion.
  • Contribute to the six criteria for promotion in Extension academic rank which include: program leadership, Extension teaching, scholarship, engagement, program management, and service.

Required Qualifications:

Education:

Master’s degree or Ph.D. degree in animal science, agricultural engineering, reproductive physiology, agricultural economics or closely related field or DVM.

Experience:

Designing, delivering, and evaluating swine-related educational programs; designing, conducting, and/or collaborating in research projects; using technology in an educational programming setting; and grant writing and revenue development.

Skills/Abilities:

Excellent oral and written communication skills and the ability to develop and maintain effective working relationships with colleagues, partners and stakeholders are required.

Preferred Qualifications:

Three years professional experience, including the graduate study period, in a field related to swine production.

Salary/Benefits/Appointment

  1. The Extension Educator – Livestock is an annual University academic professional appointment with Extension academic rank.
  2. Promotion in Extension academic rank is expected and is contingent upon accomplishments related to each of the promotion criteria.

  4. Performance evaluation is conducted annually according to University and Extension policies.
  5. Reimbursement for travel and subsistence is available in accordance with University policy. (Must provide own means for traveling throughout the state and legally required vehicle insurance).

http://www.extension.umn.edu/swine/ University of Minnesota Swine Extension encompasses programs and activities developed and delivered by Extension Educators located in out-state Minnesota and State Specialists located on the St. Paul campus and at Research and Outreach Centers. Extension staff located in 8 departments from two colleges work together to deliver cutting edge information to pork producers throughout the state. In addition to pork producers, Swine Extension staff interact on various levels with local, state, and federal agencies; allied industry professionals; veterinarians; staff of Minnesota and National Pork Boards; builders of swine production units; and Extension professionals in other states. Extension Educators in Swine are located in out-state offices but have statewide responsibilities and are expected to collaborate in applied swine research working with faculty and staff at U of MN swine research facilities located in Waseca, Morris, and St. Paul.
