Diagnostic Testing for PEDV Antigen and Antibody Detection

Since PEDV entered the United States, millions of piglets have died. Veterinary diagnostic laboratories quickly developed sensitive and specific real-time, reverse-transcription polymerase chain reaction (RRT-PCR) assays to detect PEDV in a variety of porcine and environmental samples. However, lack of a reliable method to evaluate immunity has hindered progress in PEDV research, control and prevention. Key items needed to be addressed. These included the development and validation of enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) for serological and environmental testing to determine the history of exposure, efficacy of feedback and duration of immunity. This project was implemented to produce PEDV viral protein antigens, produce an ELISA assay and validate it for routine diagnostic analysis. [Source: Pork Checkoff Research Projects]

Key Points:

  • The study developed and validated a test (ELISA assay) to predict previous Porcine Epidemic Diarrhea Virus (PEDV) exposure.
  • The test provides high PEDV sensitivity and specificity, allowing clinical diagnostic laboratories to use one test.
  • This application will help advance PEDV prevention and control strategies.
