Avian Influenza Diagnosed in Nigeria ? A Threat to the Americas and Europe?

An outbreak of avian influenza in a poultry farm in Kaduna State, Nigeria was reported to the OIE on February 6, 2006. The outbreak reportedly began on January 10th on a farm housing commercial layers, ostriches and geese. To date, 40,000 birds have been destroyed in an attempt to prevent disease spread.

This outbreak is potentially significant due to its location near the intersection of the East Atlantic and Black Sea/Mediterranean migratory flyways. The East Atlantic flyway covers much of western Europe and the extreme northeastern portions of North America. This flyway also intersects the Atlantic Americas flyway which encompasses the entire eastern half of North and South America.
