According to a February 7, 2006 report to the OIE, a Foot and Mouth Disease (FMD) outbreak has been diagnosed in Turkey. FMD virus type A has been confirmed in the village of Nadirli in the Thrace region located in the northwestern part of the country.
The outbreak, involving 2 cattle, is reportedly the result of the introduction of new animals or animal products. The origin of the infected animals or animal products was not identified, however. Control measures including treatment of affected animals, quarantine, movement restrictions, screening, zoning and premise disinfection have been implemented.
According to OIE, the last outbreak of FMD in Turkey occurred in June, 2001 and was identified as virus type O. FMD serotypes A and O are endemic in Turkey although the Thrace region had been reportedly free for a number of years.
