The US Meat Export Federation (USMEF), a nonprofit trade association promoting international markets for US meat products, reports that US pork exports set a new record in 2005 for the 15th straight year.
Based on recently released USDA statistics, pork exports (including variety meats) totaled 1.158 million metric tons worth $2.635 billion. Japan was the largest importer with volume increasing 13% over 2004. Mexico was the second largest importer even though the volume decreased by 8%.
The largest increases in volume went to South Korea (158%), Eastern Europe (239%) and Oceania (324%). Besides Mexico, Taiwan was the only other top 10 importer to show a decline (-37%) over 2004 levels.
