Item Descriptions:

  1. South Dakota Pheasant/ Prairie Dog Hunting Trip–Dave Madsen

Lyle & Kim Anderson opened the Anderson Ranches Lodge for hunting in the fall of 2005 to accommodate the many clients who have come for years to hunt deer, pheasant, sharptail grouse and prairie dogs. The lodge hosts 16 patrons at a time in 8 well-appointed bedrooms, 2 beds per room. A complete kitchen and dining room, as well as a lounge area provide all you can eat and drink, prepared by a well-trained staff under Kim?s direction. Meals and beverages are included in the hunting package.

Anderson Ranches are located near Whitehorse, South Dakota, 45 minutes west of Lake Oahe and about 2 hours northwest of Pierre. Extensive land holdings and leases give the Andersons hunting access to land measured in tens of thousands of acres. Located primarily on the Cheyenne River Sioux Reservation, this country can only be described as "Big!" It’s just north of the filming site of Dances with Wolves and looks exactly the same.

You’ll bid on a 4-night, 3-day hunt for 6 people whose regular retail price is $7,200 ($1,200/person). The Andersons have consented to offer this package to the AASV Foundation for half price, so all proceeds in excess of $3,600 remain with the Foundation. Larger parties of up to 16 can be accommodated for groups interested in hunting together.

Three species are available in this package, sharptail grouse, pheasant, and prairie dogs. Each morning will start with breakfast and sharptail hunting. When the state mandated time for hunting pheasants approaches, hunters will be transported to pheasant habitat. When the pheasant limit is reached, those that wish can try their luck at long range sharp-shooting at one of the many prairie dog towns in the area. One town in particular covers 2,100 acres…prairie dogs for a mile in every direction! Those too foot-weary to continue can retire to the lounge for conversation and libations.

Dates are open at this time but need to be reserved by April 1. Transportation to the lodge and South Dakota hunting licenses are the hunters’ responsibility and expense. Arrangements for pickup at the Pierre airport are possible if the entire group is assembled there at one time.

Bartending and bird cleaning will be provided by AASV past-president who might also provide transportation.
