South Korea Declares FMD Outbreaks Resolved

Two Foot and Mouth Disease (FMD) outbreaks, which began in early to mid April, 2010 in South Korea, have been declared resolved by the Ministry for Food, Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries (MIFAFF).

After the completion of stamping-out and disinfection in the restricted zones, clinical surveillance and serological testing in the restricted zones were completed by the government veterinary authorities. All results were negative. Therefore, MIFAFF has lifted all protection, surveillance and risk zones.

The FMD virus was eradicated without the use of vaccination which will enable South Korea to apply to regain its status as FMD-free without vaccination.
