Position Announcement: Interdisciplinary- Biological Scientist or Veterinary Medical Officer

This position, based in Ames, Iowa, will serve as a Veterinary Biologics Specialist at the Center for Veterinary Biologics, Inspection and Compliance unit, responsible for an established number of veterinary biologics producers and importers, for biologics inspection and control activities required by the enforcement of the Virus-Serum-Toxin Act and the pursuant rules and regulations.

Duties

The duties may include, but are not limited to:

  • Plans, organizes, and coordinates biologics program activities for a variety of vaccines, bacterins, antiserums, toxoids, diagnostics, and other biologics.
  • Advises and collaborates with the various levels of program and agency officials concerning scheduling and execution of all phases of the biologics field program.
  • Schedules, organizes, and conducts inspections of facilities, production methods, records and testing procedures to prevent the marketing of worthless, contaminated, dangerous or harmful biologics.
  • Reviews, analyzes, and screens manufacturing and testing reports, requests for manufacturing, testing and marketing exceptions, outlines of methods of production and testing, research data.
  • Establishes and maintains cooperative and effective working relationships with personnel and with management officials and scientists representing biologics establishments.
  • Reviews biologic facility construction plans and specifications involving new construction or modification of existing structures to determine accordance with good manufacturing and disease control programs.
  • Organizes and coordinates investigations of reported field problems associated with the use of veterinary biologics. Initiates action based on findings.
  • Coordinates the investigation of alleged or suspected violations of the Virus-Serum-Toxin Act or regulations by persons other than licensees or permittees.
  • Trains and coordinates activities of one or more Biologics Specialists in all aspects of the biologics field program.
