Position Announcement: Interdisciplinary – Biological Scientist/Veterinary Medical Officer

This position serves as a Veterinary Biologics Specialist at the Center for Veterinary Biologics. You will be responsible for an established number of veterinary biologics producers and importers, for biologics inspection and control activities required by the enforcement of the Virus-Serum-Toxin Act and the pursuant rules and regulations.

Duties

The duties described are for the full-performance level. At developmental grade levels, assignments will be of more limited scope, performed with less independence and limited complexity.

The duties may include, but are not limited to:

  • Plans, organizes, and coordinates biologics program activities for a variety of vaccines, bacterins, antiserums, toxoids, diagnostics, transgenic plants and other biologics.
  • Schedules, organizes, and conducts in-plant inspections of facilities, production methods, records and testing procedures.
  • Reviews, analyzes, and screens manufacturing and testing reports, requests for manufacturing, testing/marketing exceptions, outlines of methods of production/testing, and research data.
  • Establishes and maintains cooperative and effective working relationships with APHIS laboratory and staff personnel and with management officials and scientists representing biologics establishments.
  • Organizes and coordinates investigations associated with field adverse events, or the marketing of veterinary biologics.
  • Coordinates the investigation of alleged or suspected violations of the Virus-Serum-Toxin Act or regulations by persons other than licensees or permittees.
  • Prepares and presents technical and general informational talks and training presentations on biologics program activities.

  • Testing Designated Position: Selectee must submit to a urinalysis to screen for illegal drug use prior to appointment and random testing thereafter. Final appointment and continued employment is conditional on negative results for illegal drug use.
  • Work is performed in an office, in biologics manufacturing plants and testing laboratories, in animal holding areas (caged areas, pens, lots, hatcheries and farms) and plots for transgenic plants and feed mills.
  • Work involves much standing and walking, and is sometimes performed in unusually cold or warm environments. Approximately one-third of work time is spent in travel status.
  • Immunization against diseases being studied which are transmissible to humans may be required.
  • Criminal Justice Information Services database check required for work involving Biological Select Agents and Toxins.
