AASV Executive Director Search

The American Association of Swine Veterinarians is a not-for-profit organization supporting the swine industry. It has approximately 1300 members involved in practice, industry, and academia in more than 40 countries. AASV is recognized for its strong support of members, focus on education, and leadership on pig health and well-being.

It is the mission of the American Association of Swine Veterinarians to:

  • increase the knowledge of swine veterinarians
  • protect and promote the health and well-being of pigs
  • advocate science-based approaches to veterinary, industry, and public health issues
  • promote the development and availability of resources that enhance the effectiveness of professional activities

  • mentor students, encouraging life-long careers as swine veterinarians

Role Summary

The American Association of Swine Veterinarians' (AASV) Executive Director is responsible to achieve AASV’s mission and objectives through his/her leadership and management of the organization. He/She reports to the Board of Directors, serves the membership and supports volunteer leadership groups. The Executive Director has overall strategic and operational responsibility for AASV’s staff, financial management, programs, annual conference, and organizational growth. Responsibilities include: advocating for the interests of the swine veterinary profession in external organizations; collaborating with all swine related organizations; keeping the AASV and its membership current on national and international issues; and leading internal activities to foster the success of AASV members.

  • Position is a full-time employee.
  • Candidate must be a licensed veterinarian from an accredited university.
  • Current or prior AASV membership is a plus.

Key Responsibilities

Leadership – Anticipate and align AASV to future profession, industry, societal, economic and demographic changes. Serve as the internal and external face of the organization and lead efforts in delivery of the mission. Maintain current and leading knowledge on swine medicine and industry issues and trends. Lead strategy and goal development. Demonstrate commitment to the value of education and animal welfare.

Advocacy and relationships – Maintain and advance AASV’s working relationships with influential organizations and universities. Support research and standards development aligned with the AASV mission.

Organization executive – Create plans and take action to achieve strategic objectives. Manage the overall performance of staff, financial activities, annual conference, programs, outreach, publications, membership services and operational systems. Utilize efficient and up-to-date organizational processes to accomplish activities and provide responsive membership services. Communicate medical, technical, and industry issues through high-quality AASV journal and e-news publications. Support the Board of Directors and Foundation.

Finances – Develop an annual budget for Board approval, administer funds, and provide comprehensive, regular reports and forecasts on revenues and expenditures. Adhere to accepted policies and procedures to ensure compliance to tax, legal and regulatory requirements.

Human resources – Determine ongoing staffing requirements and organizational assets needs. Manage all HR functions. Identify and enlist leaders for committee roles.

Annual conference – Plan and deliver AASV’s annual education conference. Responsibilities include: content overview, event logistics, and securing sponsorships. Plan and secure contracted venues 3+ years in advance.

Qualifications

  • Shall be a licensed veterinarian, from an accredited university, with a minimum of 5-8+ years of food animal practitice, industry or academic experience.
  • Progressive leadership and organizational management experience including financial management.
  • Ability to work with governmental and lobbying agencies.

• Current knowledge about and respectful of global cultures, member needs and swine medicine.
• Demonstrates diplomacy appropriate for varying levels of people and types of organizations.
• Confidently represents the voice, interest and decision of an organization, even if different than personal perspective.

• Leadership and management of administrative staff in dispersed locations.
• Advanced an organization by acting constructively and decisively after assimilating widely varied viewpoints.
• Track record of working effectively and successfully with volunteers.
• Manages by plan and objectives, establishes goals, encourages staff to own projects and work.
• Support of an organizational Board of Directors is a strong plus.
• Documented leadership in achieving an organizational mission and strategic objectives.
• Quantifiable, positive impact in leading an organization.

Compensation

  • Salary based on experience and skills, with the salary range base of $135,000.
  • Benefits include contributions to health, retirement and professional expenses.
