Most research has concentrated on thehusbandry-influenced occurrence of CM. The pathogenesis of CMsuggests a prominent role for Escherichia coli and itsendotoxins, although other Enterobacteriaceae species havebeen isolated from affected animals. Most studies on CM wereconducted between 1970 and 1990. It is time for a closer look atthis disease, particularly with respect to the economic damage itcauses and the lack of recent literature. Treatment and use of bodytemperature as a single indicator for diagnosis of CM must beregarded critically. A combination of appropriate criteria shouldbe applied to achieve a proper diagnosis and to minimize use ofantibiotics. Additional approaches, for instance, incorporatingknowledge concerning virulence factors of E coli, arepromising tools for future prevention. ER -
