#15 Pig Quilt to honor memory of Dr. Bernie Curran

Donated by: Mary Ann Curran

The AASV was saddened at the loss of Dr. Bernie Curran to cancer in June of 2007. Dr. Curran had been a member of the AASV since receiving his DVM degree from Iowa State University in 1974. He served as president of the AASV in 1986 and was a Leman Fellow donor to the AASV Foundation. In 1999, Bernie was honored with the AASV Meritorious Service Award, and at last year's AASV annual meeting in Orlando, he was named 2007 Swine Practitioner of the Year. Bernie's wife, Mary Ann, is handcrafting and donating a very special quilt dedicated to his memory. There was only one Bernie, and this quilt is a celebration of his interests and his life.

Here's what Mary Ann says: "The design for this pig quilt is still tumbling around in my imagination. I'm planning a wall- or lap-sized quilt of colorful classic pig blocks, with a subtle tree of life incorporated into the background - a tribute to Bernie's love of plants as well as pigs, and a universal motif for the circle of life. What you see is an array of probable fabrics, after Christmas to be taking shape into something more interesting."

Valentine's Day Update: The quilt top is now pieced and ready for quilting, as you can see from the photo at right. Mary Ann is just starting to quilt and will be working the tree of life motif into the quilting pattern. The finished quilt will be on display Monday, March 10 at the AASV meeting in San Diego.

Donated by: Pipestone Veterinary Clinic, PLLC

You will have the unique opportunity to enjoy a truly wonderful piece of art made of stone! Catlinite (pipestone) is found only in the area that is nestled in the prairie of southwest Minnesota. The hand-carved pipe features four circles representing the four winds: North, South, East, and West, enhanced by a silver overlay. The 30-inch stem is handcrafted from the sumac bush also found near the quarries of Pipestone. Read more about this fascinating tradition in the four books included with the pipe.
