Wallace E. Brandt

Dr. Brandt (Illinois 1955), 66, of Durango, Colorado died September 2, 1997

Before retiring in 1991, Dr. Brandt had spent 20 years in food animal practice in Flanagan, Illinois and then 16 years as Manager, Veterinary Clinical Research, Hoffmann-La Roche, Inc. at Nutley, New Jersey.

Dr. Brandt was a founding member of the AASP, serving as President in 1972. In 1976 he was elected President of the 1976 International Pig Veterinary Society (IPVS) at its Congress in Ames, Iowa. The AASP honored Dr. Brandt in 1980 with the Howard W. Dunne Memorial Award for outstanding service to the AASP and the swine industry and in 1994 with the Meritorious Service Award for exemplary service, commitment, and leadership dedicated to the AASP organization.

While in food animal practice at Flanagan, Illinois, Dr. Brandt served on the Executive Board of the state association from 1968 to 1975, serving as chairman in 1974 and 1975. He was active in civic activities, serving as mayor of the village of Flanagan for 12 years and founding president of a nonprofit home for the aging for 8 years.

Dr. Brandt was an honor roll member of the AVMA and a member of the AASP, serving as Historian for this organization from 1991-1996. As Historian, he documented the Annual Meeting with photographs for archives as well as a written synopsis of the meeting for Swine Health and Production and the Journal of the American Veterinary Medical Association.

The Wally Brandt Endowment will grant the Brandt Award annually to a senior student with an interest in rural veterinary medicine.

A memorial service will be held in Durango, Colorado on Saturday, September 6, 1997. A memorial service of interment will be held in Anchor, Illinois later this month.
